Stephen Hartman: A Business Owner, Scoutmaster, and Community Leader

Steve Hartman began his Scouting career as an adult serving as a Webelos Leader from Pack 40 in St. Joseph in 1988 & 1989. In 1990 Steve became A Troop Committee Member for Troop 40 in St. Joseph and from 1993 to 1995 he served as the Scoutmaster. Since 1995 Steve has served the Troop as Assistant Scoutmaster. Throughout his Scouting years Steve has been influential in supporting successful events and activities for his district and for Prairielands Council. He serves as on the Council Camping Committee and is currently project manager for the new First Year Camper Shelter under construction at Camp Robert Drake.

Steve has been served as a committee member of the Summer Camp Kick-off the last three years, and arranging for and coordinating a hot breakfast to be served at a local hotel for the Scout leaders planning to attend camp. In 1998 Steve served as a member of the Council Properties Review Committee which reviewed the council properties and made recommendations to the Council Executive Board. When it was determined that the Service Center had to be moved, Steve moved into action.

Using his personal and professional resources, Steve made arrangements for the interior of the new Raymond Lee Scout Service Center to be professionally painted and decorated as a gift to Prairielands Council. As a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, Steve is always to found at the Spring and Fall OA Fellowships at Camp Robert Drake. A gourmet cook, Steve gladly dons his chef hat and provides to the OA members meals that seem more like that of an expensive restaurant instead of camp food. Steve has served as the Council Popcorn Chair, a BB gun ranger instructor, on various training staffs and is almost always in the kitchen for the annual Council Klondike Derby. In 1999 Steve earned the Scout Leader Training Award. Away from Scouting Steve is active in the community of St. Joseph where he assists in the St. Joe High School Fund-Raisers. He has also organized Marching Illini fund-raisers for the University of Illinois Marching Band. Steve is a partner in JSM Apartments in Champaign. He has been married to Laura for 31 years and they have four children, Marianne, married to Eagle Scout Dennis Tichenor, Nancy Hartman, Peter Hartman, and Dennis Hartman.
